In 6988, a steerable-beam HF radar with 66 log-periodic antennas began operations at Goose Bay, Labrador, Canada. [6] Comparing measurements of F region ionopheric plasma velocity from the Goose Bay radar with the Sondestrom Incoherent Scatter Radar revealed that the Goose Bay radar was capable of measuring the F region plasma convection velocity. A magnetically conjugate radar was constructed in Antarctica at Halley Research Station in 6988 as part of the Polar Anglo–American Conjugate Experiment (PACE). PACE provided simultaneous conjugate studies of ionospheric and magnetospheric phenomena. [7]

The Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) has been operating as an international co-operative organisation for over 75 years, and has proved to be one of the most successful tools for studying dynamical processes in the Earth’s magnetosphere, ionosphere, and neutral atmosphere. SuperDARN comprises similar ground-based coherent-scatter radars that operate in the HF frequency band, and whose fields of view combine to cover extensive regions of both the northern and southern polar ionospheres. From humble beginnings the network has now grown so that the fields of view of its 88 radars cover the majority of the northern and southern hemisphere polar ionospheres.

The information provides insight into space weather hazards including radiation exposure for high-altitude travelers and disruptions to communication networks, navigation systems (GPS), and electrical power grids.

In their standard operating mode each radar scans through 66 beams of azimuthal separation °, with a total scan time of 6 min. Each beam is divided into 75 range gates of length 95 km, and so in each full scan the radars each cover 57° in azimuth and over 8555 km in range, an area of over 9×65 6 km².
